BLR - The future

Evening all,

Its been nearly 12 months since the first signs of what became the BLR started to appear initially in my bedroom. 4 Months later, it moved outside with a semi permanent route laid roughly around the garden. But what of the future of the route and its stock.

The BLR itself

Hopefully the route will continue to expand over the coming months with plans to purchase more trackwork, larger radius curves and addition points for extra siding space. There's also talk of a eventual permanent running line alongside one side of the house but this can only happen once the fence it would run alongside has been replaced and once the current stock additions have been completed/sufficient funds raised.

Since work started, it was decided that all trains would either be live steam or battery electric. However, this brings its own disadvantages. Live steam engines aren't the cheapest things to purchase/maintain while battery electrics are normally either kits, scratch built or converted DC/DCC models which depending on the model chosen, can either be easy to make or convert while others can be near impossible for someone of my skill level. So, a few days ago I purchased a new Bachmann G scale controller split from a train set which should with the relavent connectors and assiocated wiring should allow a greater variaty of engines to run on the line.

Motive Power

Although the line will remain predominately Livesteam/Battery powered, there are plans for newer Bachmann/LGB track powered engines to be purchased for the route with one or two already on thier way for use on the route due to arrive over the coming months.

'Leader' has been the only engine that has run with a train of any length over the route in its many forms and has managed them with ease. Hopefully with further additions of rolling stock, the engine's capilbilities will be tested to show just how powerful the unit is. Eventually, there are plans to purchase addition steam engines  to run with Leader with the current trio being consideed a Accucraft Ragleth, a Roundhouse Bertie or a Mamod.

'Vale of Ffestiniog' has only ever run on its own over the route but even that hasn't been without its problems. Due to its construction, it weights nothing at all compared to a basic LGB model. Although once wieghted down its a very effective engine, the fact that I've lost the rest of the kit by accident means that it will remain uncompleted and therefore unused for the forseeable future.

Due to the lack of a working battery electric engine for the forseeable future, plans are to purchase a one or two from the IP Engineering range of kits. At the moment, the two perfered engines are:-

A Ezee Range Rapier (Image copyright IP Engineering)

A 'Fenor'/Simplex Diesel Kit (Image copyright IP Engineering)

Both these kits are perfect for what is needed to work the route when I just want to run something quickly or when I just want to watch the train go round instead of 'Leader'.

Rolling Stock

At the time of writing, the line has 3 coaches, 7 various wagons and 2 brake vans from 4 different manufacters. Although there are plans to expand on the selection available, a element of standardisation is needed to stop things getting out of control.

The line's current coaches are from the IP Engineering LSB and NWNGR ranges. Although I am a big fan of the WHR/FR, there isn't a need for a long line of coaches to run on the line like there is for Blaencwm. As such, there are plans for the purchase of just 3 more coaches for the line. 2 of there will be based on FR/WHR prototypes and the third a Brake coach from the LSB range to complete two 3 coach sets.

As a general rule, on narrow gauge lines there is more wagons than any other type of rolling stock on the line. A rule I plan to maintain. At the moment, there are plans for 2 distintive sets. 1 British and 1 continental. The British set will be formed of entirely Accucraft or IP Engineering items. Currently, there are plans for a W&LLR Brake Van and additional L&BR 4w wagons to run with the others aready owned as part of the British set. The continental set is to run unchanged apart from the coupling change mentioned below.

At the moment, there are three main types of coupling in use. Accucraft chopper couplings, 3 link chains and LGB Hook & loop couplings. Fortunately, due to the design of the Accucraft couplings, all of the British outline rolling stock is complatible with each other. Currently, there are plans to convert all the LGB rolling stock to having a IP Engineering designed equivient on one end of the unit with a LGB standard unit on the other end to make things easier to run with the kit built and live steam engines.

Quite a long post there but as usual, all changes and new additons will be fully mentioned on the blog.

Until next time,

Jon

BLR - New Rolling Stock

Evening all,

In my last post I mentioned new additions for the BLR. Well I can now happily reveal what they are after some progress has been made constructing them.

All 4 items I've done work on so far are from the Ezee ranges made by IP Engineering. All 4 have gone together really easily although there going to be a short pause as I need to purchase a roof forming jig to allow the roofs to be fitted on the 2 bigger items.

Carriage No.1

Carriage No.2

Brake Van No. 10

There is another kit which is based on one of the current WHR (P) coaches again from the IP Engineering range of kits which once the other coaches are finished, will be started on.

Until next time,

BLR Update August 2012

Evening all,

After seemingly the 6th location and setup change this year, the BLR is finally seeing some more use after a long break due to exams. That said, a few new items are on thier wa to me but more on them when they arrive.

Here's just a few pictures of the current layout:-

Review - Midnight Metropolitian Part 2

Evening all,

I finally got round to testing the new London Transport 57xx Pannier tank as included in the Midnight Metropolitian set. All I can say is wow. Its a very smooth runner with plently of power. On my small line the trains were kept short, but the engine was pulling 5 Bachmann Mk1s with ease around my radius 1 curves.

Unlike most Bachmann engines I get, I have something to compare it too. I already have one of Bachmann's 8750 Class Pannier tanks in a Industrial Livery and that engine has proven to be a strong, reliable and effective unit. I can safely say its London Transport Sibling is proving to be the same as its the industrial model. If you get a chance to get hold of one of these train sets, I can certainly recommend it.

Until next time,

Jon

Amberley Rail Gala - July 14th/15th

Evening all,

Just a selection of photographs taken by me over the 2012 Amberley Rail gala. Most of them were taken in areas of the museum that aren't publicly accessible (The joys of being a Volunteer).

Until next time,

Review - Midnight Metropolitian

Time for something different, a Review into a new train for the OO layout.

For a long time I've wanted a model of one of the London Transport Pannier Tanks used in the late 60s/early 70s. Recently, Bachmann has brought out the 'Midnight Metropolitian' containing just such a engine along with a small set of LT wagons.

I just had to get one. Plus, it gives me another controller for Blaencwm and Blaencwm Works which run off the Bachmann DC controllers.

The train is well, fantastic. The liveries are applied crisply and well done to Bachmann for creating a very unique trainset.

The engine itself is fantastic with all the right detailing and full lining applied. It is also DCC ready.

The LT engines were uniqure in having their fleet numbers painted in large numbers across the bunkers and Bachmann has recreated this brilliantly.

I haven't had a chance to run this yet so I'll post back with more infomation on how the unit runs out of the box shortly.

Until next time,

Jon

Blaencwm Works gains a signal

Evening all,

After a recent 009 Society Meeting, I managed to get my hands on a new signal for the Works layout. Featuring a working light, it just needs wiring in before it can be used to protect the line ahead.

New and Repainted stock for Blaencwm

Afternoon all,

Since my last 009 related post, not a lot's happened but that doesn't mean I've been doing nothing. Recently, I got my hands on 9 FR Quarryman Coaches, 3 FR style bogie coaches, another VoR Coach along with multiple repaints of existing stock. Plus, something completely different in the form of a Ratiobash.

The 9 Quarryman Coaches have been split into two 4 coach sets with the 9th (ironically the only one not painted red), having its running gear removed and turned into a grounded coach body on the works layout.

The VoR Coach has been turned into a representation of FR No.26 as it ran in the early 1960s. Its the latest in a set of eventually 6 coaches, all being repainted/converted to allow them to run on 'Doveston' which is set in north west wales during the 1960s.

Below, its shown with FR 'Bowsiders' 17 and 20 along with FR No. 11 which is the slowly being built up 1960s set.

The 3 FR style coaches are all Parkside dundas kits based on FR No.10. So far I've built 2, a all 3rd coach and a 1st Observation Coach. The plan is to finish them both in unlined Red with black running gear. The Ratiobash is the biggest carriage width and hieght wise I've ever got to run on my 009 layouts. Effective a Ratio 4 wheeled coach for OO mounted on two N gauge bogies to run on 009. I think the only thing that makes it look small is 'Rhur' or possibly a WHR NGG16. It came with a WLLR style Brake Van which has had custom couplings added to it to allow the pair to run as a small set.

One of the big repaints has been 'Palmerston'. Now on its 7th coat of paint (yes, I've been counting) and work on the saddle tanks to remove some of the parts of the kit intended for 'Prince', 'Palmerston' is now finished. Although, with the possibility of another England on the horizon, 'Palmerston' might not last very long.......
Until Next time,

Jon

Long time no update

Afternoon all,

Just a post to show I haven't died and am still around. Not a lot of work has happened on the layouts for various reasons but now they are all sorted out, work on them should hopefully start soon.

Until next time,

Jon
